“We must provide spaces that invite children into relationships.”

(Amelia Gambetti)

We are TLC, The Learning Community in Mt. Albert, Ontario.
We are a grassroots group of parents and educators seeking dialogue on how to create a holistic setting for our ‘elementary school aged’ children to spend their day in. We want our children to be allowed to have ideas, plan, organize and carry them out together, ask questions and seek answers, basically to co-construct their daily environment. We feel we have a right to a solution that suits our community and values, not one-size fits all. We should be able to be supported through public educational funding, as similar parent groups do, not 50 minutes drive from our community, and as many parents in other provinces do, for example through charter schools. By this we mean that we should not have to enrol our children in private schools in order to get the quality of education our values require. We see children and ourselves as curious, competent and able.

For further insight into TLC, check out “In A Nutshell”.

Thank you to those who came to listen to Alyson Schafer speak with us before YRDSB Standing Committee, on May 9th, 2011.

To sign up for the  potential alternate program/ school for JK- grade 4,  2012, come to a meeting. We are looking for children ages 3-10 to collaborate in a hands-on inquiry based, child-led mini project that we want to film.
